Let me start by saying these rumors are most likely fake. Blogs like Search Engine Journal take the fact that just because the stock price rose by nearly 19% for Yahoo!, it dropped earlier this morning.
A rise in stock suggests that people heard rumors of an acquisition, but this cannot be used as a reliable source of information, since it is based on what others believe, not know. Wall Street Journal simply reported that Microsoft and Yahoo! were talking about how they can overtake Google.
If anything, they would probably partner their search engines. I highly doubt that Yahoo! and Microsoft would consider a merger of their companies right away.
