Well we know that there are numerous teenage webmasters out there are amazing webmasters with a good profile. Well a 15 year old kid decided to use his profound knowledge to pull a prank on the multi billion dollar company, Google. He took advantage of all the free News Press Releasing companies there are and decided to trick Google as well as millions of other internet users into thinking that he was hired by Google.
The 15 year old child is Tom Vandetta was a Google fan who even claimed to go around town for Halloween dressed as Google’s CEO. The press release was done through a free press release company, I-Newswire (Currently has a PR7, but will definitely go up with all this attention!) and was picked up by Google News. The Press Release was submitted by someone named, Sonya Johnson, which was of course a fake name made up by the child.
The Press Release is no longer available on Google, but it read:
15 year old student, Tom Vendetta has been hired by search engine giant Google Inc. The student will receive a lowered salary, which will be placed into a bank account for future education, said Google CEO Larry Page. When asked what role Vendetta will play at the Tech Giant’s offices, Page said he wouldnt have a role at the Main Offices. Instead he would work from his home in the New Jersey suburbs. Vendetta will be incharge of working with recent security flaw’s in Google’s beta e-mail service, “Gmail”. Google said they first found out about him when they discovered the student’s blog, at http://www.tomvendetta.be. The media giant said they looked forward to working with Vendetta’s expertise in JavaScript and AJAX.
After a few hours the press release, Tom logged into his Digg Account and was informed that his small prank has actually been indexed by the Digg Spider and is now known throughout the internet. This, in fact, made Tom scared and as he quoted (from http://www.tomvendetta.be)
At that moment, I felt my stomach knot up and my heart drop. I knew exactly what happened and knew that I would end up regretting posting that.
Quickly, he posted a small confession post on his blog at http://tomtothevendetta.blogspot.com/2006/03/i-am-so-sorry.html and recieved a lot of comments in such a short time. He believed that he has ruined all hope of ever working at Google as well. However, his gMail Account flooded with over 500 E-Mails and he had to open up a new gMail and MySpace Account. He has informed his parents about this and they are currently trying to change their phone number. On the other hand, he has recieved an E-Mail from Google saying that his dreams of working at Google has not been shattered.
This prank may seem funny to some people, considering it was a teenager who pulled the prank on a company as famous as Google. However, this prank has caused Google News to lose a lot of credibility. The engineers are currently working hard to include new Spam Filters as well as stricter guidelines for free press release companies. Another option they are considering is to stop picking up Press Releases from free Press Release companies. They have already removed I-Newswire from Google News and I-Newswire removed the fake press release quickly.
