Google Entering TV Advertising

Google TVWell Micro Market blogged on Eric Schmidt (Google’s CEO) who is thinking of bringing Google into the TV Advertising industry. At the moment he is doing this for the same reason Google AdWords started, to display as relevant ads as possible! Eric is frustrated with the fact that mos tof the time the advertisements aren’t targetted toward the audience.

The TV Market is nearly a $74 Billion market and Eric talked about his views on the subject at the Search Engine Strategies conference and claimed it to be a “Big opportunity to provide greater value to advertisers”. This is a lot similar to Google’s Radio Advertising $20 Billion market or the Google Print (which failed).

Here is a snippet on what Google’s research has to say:

Focused on using broadcast viewing to automatically present relevant information on a web browser…The system could keep up with users while they channel surf, presenting them with a real-time forum about a live political debate one minute and an ad-hoc chat room for a sporting event in the next. And, all of this would be done without users ever having to type or to even know the name of the program or channel being viewed.

and..

Taking this further, we could collect snippets from the web describing the actors appearing in a movie or present maps of locales within the movie as it takes place (no matter if users are watching it as a live broadcast or as a recoded broadcast).

Here is a quote from Eric Schmidt at the last months Q2 Earnings conference:
