Well today morning Loren Baker expressed his views on Cyworld and we have generated a couple as well!
MySpace is mostly restricted on creating a simple page and getting as many friends possible and simply leaving comments. It is always a hassle having to create new codes and keep your MySpace Profile as organized as possible.
In addition to that, there are tons of businesses closing in on MySpace and are creating useless profiles and adding as many friends as possible using FriendBot Suite and other MySpace Bots.
However, Cyworld (which has just been released for the U.S., originally meant for the Korean community) offers so much more than a simple social community on the web. They offer:
- Tag-Based Interface in a Pop-Up Window (hard for bots)
- Shop Interface (currency is “acorns”)
- More User-Interactive Interface
- Personal User-customizable room called your “miniroom”
However, to buy items for your “Miniroom” you need acorns. When you first sign up, you will recieve 50 acorns to buy items for your miniroom. But to recieve more, you need to pay Cyworld using PayPal or wait for special incentives like filling out a survey or so. This is the only bad thing, because other sites like NeoPets offer points for simply playing games.
Here is an example of a miniroom we quickly created (click on the image to view a cyworld miniroom):
The idea of bringing money into a child/teenager based website is not such a smart move. The worst thing about it is that they acknowledge this and are asking the children to ask their parents for money by signing up with PayPal to buy acorns.
However, this is a small addition to a ton of other features that they offer similar to MySpace. They let you manage a profile with pictures, leave comments, upload photos and such. They also offer Groups like MySpace and chat boards as well. But, they still need to do videos and so on.
The only bad thing about the cyworld is the fact that they don’t let you simply view profiles using HTML, which MySpace does. Their shortcut (us.cyworld.com/sixty6arcade) doesn’t show the profile and requires you to give a pop-up, which Search Engines like Google don’t like a lot.
