Welcome to the first chapter of the Redscowl SEO Book. This chapter will discuss an overview of what Search Engine Optimization is, as well as how Search Engines rank your website.

SEO (shorter for Search Engine Optimization) is a method to get your website to appear in the top rankings for a given keyword. The top 3 SE’s (Search Engines) are currently:

1. Google
2. Yahoo!
3. MSN

The main reason that people want to get the top rasnkings for a keyword is to help drive traffic (and possibly customers) to their website.

For example, if you search for “web hosting” in a search engine like Google, you will see a few good web hosting companies who appear in the top 10 rankings. Now we all know that there are numerous web hosting companies out there and web hosting is a competitive keyword.

Also, Google is used by billions and trillions of people each day and web hosting companies in top rankings in Google for “web hosting” will definitely get a lot of traffic each day and this might create a lot of customers for them as well, since the more traffic you recieve, the more customers you get!
