Welcome back to this, the final part in this weeks study. Today, we’re going to be examining what I believe to be THE single most powerful free marketing tool at your disposal. Books have been written on it. People regularly debate the best ways to go about doing it. And yet hardly any actually succeed. So what is it, and how do we use it?
It’s Viral Marketing. For those of you who don’t know what viral marketing is, it’s basically when something has “Wow” factor, and because of that it spreads by word of mouth at an incredible rate, often garnering TV coverage, radio spots, and other such things. Recent examples of great viral marketing campaigns have been The Million Dollar Website, and going back a little further, The Whole Truth.
So how do you start one? Put simply, you need to have a great USP (Unique Selling Point) about whatever you do. You need to have something that differentiates yourself from your competition, so that people sit up and take notice of you. A great example is a marketing campaign that I’m going to be running soon over at The Music Challenge. The way this is made different is by highlighting the “underdog” status. And it works with everything.
If you’re unlikely to succeed, make sure people know. People want to see other people do the impossible. People like an underdog. So use those things to your advantage. Then highlight problems, such as limited time, or funds, or maybe you have a large debt to clear.
Finally, get people who are well connected talking about it. Send press releases to blog owners, people with newsletters, and other such people. You want to get the biggest exposure possible, so start networking and getting in touch with these people.
Hopefully, the past five days have made you realize just how much marketing you can do for free. Take these ideas, and make your business work for you!
