Viral MarketingWelcome back to day two on viral marketing. Now, with any Viral Marketing campaign, the single most important thing is having something that makes people sit up and take notice. In other words, it should have a WOW factor. So what about you has that appeal?

Well, we start off looking at what it is you’re doing. For this study, I’m going to be using my own current project, The Music Challenge. Now, when I first started The Music Challenge, I knew I could tell a huge number of people about it very quickly. BUT I’d have to make sure I was getting my priorities right, or else it wasn’t going to get any further notice. So I sat down and looked at ways to make it exciting.

Firstly, I took myself. I’m someone who’s unknown, so I have no celebrity status to draw upon. But conversely it means I have “man on the street” style underdog appeal. And that’s a much bigger draw in terms of people’s interest.

Next, I put a 90 day time limit on it. Anything where you’re competing against the clock will draw attention. Why do you think that the clock on the bomb in the Hollywood films always stops on 0:01? People like things to go down to the wire.

Finally, I looked at the area the project was in: the music industry. At the moment, there’s a huge amount of interest in everything music label related, so I decided that I’d release the music on my own, to garner interest in self promotion and self made releasing.

And these are the ways you go about getting your priorites as well as your WOW factor. You look at yourself, at your business, and at the environment your business is in. And you draw the points of differentiation from them.

By sticking to these rules, you can make absolutely sure that you get maximum word of mouth about what you’re doing. Tune in tomorrow, when I’m going to be talking about how to write a killer press release.

Pete
