Yahoo! Tracks AdSense Clicks via MyBlogLog

I thought this was an interesting read where Shoemoney was banned from MyBlogLog (but they made up later) and found yet another MyBlogLog exploit a few posts later!

It seems that DDN found out that the JavaScript code that is loaded with MyBlogLog tracks clicks made on your advertisements on Google AdSense as well as Yahoo! Publisher Network (YPN). He made a test page and placed a Google Advertisement on a blank page with the MyBlogLog code and recorded the commands being sent out by their JavaScript code. If you don’t understand, you can simply view his great video here.

Now most people have simply been putting up a blog post that points to Shoemoney’s blog post and restate what DDN has posted. Well I want to offer my opinion on what Yahoo! can possibly do with this information.

It’s obvious that Yahoo! and Google are strong competitors in the PPC industry. If Yahoo! can get information such as which advertisements are being clicked and their click-through ratio on websites, they could possibly fine-tune their advertisements and choose better websites to display them on. After racking my brain for anything else, this is all I could come up with. It doesn’t seem like a big deal.

Nevertheless, it all comes down to the fact that Yahoo! never revealed to their users that they were tracking advertisement clicks, which is why most bloggers would be angry at MyBlogLog. Since I don’t use AdSense or any other advertisement service on MyBlogLog, I have nothing to complain about, yet.

JenSense has also put up some information regarding this exploit. Apparently the code was taken from a plugin, AdSense Click Pepper. She also found the MyBlogLog Privacy Policy to be rather “fishy” when they said:

Generally, MyBlogLog does not share personal information about you with other people or nonaffiliated companies

I wonder what they mean by that GENERALLY…
